Two large plate-cooled blast furnaces commissioned in 2024

In recent months, Danieli Corus has successfully commissioned two large blast furnaces. Firstly, Jiangsu Shagang Group’s Blast Furnace No. 4 was put into operation after modernization and more recently, the first of the two greenfield blast furnaces of Hoa Phat Steel’s Phase II project in Dung Quất was blown in.

Zhangjiagang Blast Furnace No. 4 was originally built in 2008 and commissioned in 2009. A contract for last year’s modernization project was signed in 2022. Under this project, the bosh, belly and lower stack zones were converted to the acclaimed high–conductivity lining design based on plate coolers and graphite refractories promoted by Danieli Corus. This is the only foreign blast furnace design that is embraced by the Chinese steel industry, with the Taiyuan Blast Furnace Nos. 5 and 6 operated by TISCO having been converted earlier. With a 5800 m³ volume, Shagang No. 4 in China’s largest blast furnace. It was designed to produce 14,000 tHM/24h.

The greenfield 2500 m³ working volume furnace built for Hoa Phat at their Phase II location in Dung Quất, Vietnam is the first of two identical furnaces built under a contract signed in 2021. These furnaces will add 5.6 Mtpa of production capacity in Dung Quất, where the existing capacity is based on four greenfield 1080 m³ working volume blast furnaces that were built by Danieli Corus between 2017 and 2021.
